The Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi offers an extraordinary journey through 13.8 billion years, from the Big Bang to contemporary ecosystems. With a collection of 28,000 remarkably preserved scientific objects, this pioneering museum in the Arab world invites visitors to discover the evolution of our planet and life through exceptional fossils, meteorites from space and striking reconstructions.
NHMAD represents a major milestone in Abu Dhabi's cultural and scientific ambition. Inaugurated in December 2024 on Saadiyat Island, this museum is part of the Cultural District which already houses the Louvre Abu Dhabi and will soon welcome the Zayed National Museum and Guggenheim Abu Dhabi. This ambitious project aims to position the Emirates as a global center of scientific and educational excellence, while preserving universal natural heritage accessible to new generations.
The museum's collection was gradually assembled over several years, in collaboration with international scientific institutions and paleontological research expeditions. Among the masterpieces are dinosaur fossils dating back tens of millions of years, exceptional meteorites including one from Mars, as well as rare specimens illustrating the biodiversity of terrestrial and marine ecosystems through geological epochs.
The NHMAD building was designed by the renowned Dutch architectural firm Mecanoo, recognized for its bold contemporary creations. The museum's architecture is inspired by organic forms found in nature, with structures shaped like giant leaves or umbrellas evoking both lush vegetation and geological formations. This biomorphic design creates a harmonious dialogue between the architectural container and the scientific content on display.
NHMAD's museographic journey follows a fascinating chronology, beginning with the formation of the universe 13.8 billion years ago during the Big Bang, progressing through geological epochs to the present day. Visitors successively discover the birth of the solar system, the appearance of life on Earth, the age of dinosaurs, the evolution of mammals and the emergence of humanity.
Among the must-see experiences, the Dino Play Zone offers children a fun and educational space where they can participate in simulated archaeological digs, handle fossil replicas and interact with animated dinosaur reconstructions. Thematic galleries present life-size dioramas recreating extinct ecosystems, allowing concrete visualization of prehistoric fauna and flora in their natural environment.
The meteorite collection constitutes another exceptional highlight, notably featuring a Martian meteorite whose chemical analysis reveals clues about Mars' geological composition. These celestial fragments, billions of years old, testify to the violence of impacts that shaped our solar system and offer keys to understanding the origin of life.
Location: The museum is located on Saadiyat Island, an artificial island dedicated to culture situated about 500 meters from the Abu Dhabi coast. This cultural district benefits from a peaceful seaside environment, in close proximity to the Louvre Abu Dhabi and white sand beaches.
